The Tao is like an empty vessel; Though used, it is never filled. It is profound, the source of all things. It blunts sharpness, untangles knots, softens brilliance, and becomes one with the dust. It seems hidden, yet it always exists. I do not know whose child it is; It appears to have existed before Heaven itself.
Tao Te Ching Chapter 4: Plain Language Explanation and Core Message
Tao Te Ching Chapter 4 reminds us that true strength does not come from possessing more—it comes from leaving space.
Lao Tzu compares the Tao to an empty vessel.
It appears empty, yet precisely because it is empty, it can hold everything. It seems soft, yet it never runs out of usefulness.
The greatest quality of the Tao is not power or dominance. Instead, it is its ability to remain humble, adaptable, and quietly supportive.
Lao Tzu then describes four characteristics of wisdom:
Blunt the sharpness — Don’t feel the need to prove yourself all the time.
Untangle conflicts — Resolve tension instead of creating it.
Soften the light — Appreciate the strengths of others instead of competing with them.
Become one with the dust — Stay humble regardless of your achievements.
The strongest people are rarely the loudest. They are often the ones who create an environment where everyone else can thrive.
A Biomedical Scientist’s Perspective: Scientific Breakthroughs Often Begin by Slowing Down
As a biomedical scientist, one lesson from Tao Te Ching Chapter 4 resonates with me deeply:
The biggest breakthroughs rarely come from doing more—they come from thinking differently.
Many people imagine scientific research as continuously running more experiments and collecting more data.
In reality, experienced scientists often spend more time asking better questions than performing additional experiments.
For example, imagine a new lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulation that fails to deliver the expected results.
A common reaction might be:
“Let’s design twenty more formulations.”
However, experienced researchers usually pause first and ask:
Is the RNA itself of sufficient quality?
Is the mixing process consistent?
Is the analytical assay sensitive enough?
Is the cell model appropriate?
Does the animal model truly answer the biological question?
Sometimes the real problem isn’t the formulation at all.
It’s the assumptions behind the experiment.
I’ve experienced similar situations throughout my career in both academia and the biotechnology industry. Some projects spent months optimizing manufacturing conditions, only to realize later that the original experimental design was answering the wrong question.
Rather than doing more, the better approach was to step back and redefine the problem.
That is how I interpret Lao Tzu’s opening sentence:

Real innovation requires space—for reflection, curiosity, and questioning our assumptions.
Career Development: Not Every Popular Career Path Is the Right One
Every year, students ask me questions like:
“Should I learn AI because everyone else is doing it?”
“Is biotech still a good industry?”
“Should I pursue a Ph.D.?”
These questions rarely have universal answers.
The more important question is:
What kind of work allows you to grow over the long term?
Today’s hottest industries may not be tomorrow’s.
Some people genuinely enjoy exploring unknown scientific questions and are energized by repeated failures.
Research may be the perfect career for them.
Others enjoy solving practical problems, working across teams, and bringing products to patients.
Industry might be a better fit.
Some thrive by connecting people, communicating ideas, and building organizations.
Entrepreneurship, consulting, or business development may better match their strengths.
Career planning is not about filling your résumé with as many experiences as possible.
It’s about creating enough space to discover the work that truly fits who you are.
Leadership: Great Leaders Don’t Feel the Need to Constantly Prove Themselves
One of my favorite lines in Tao Te Ching Chapter 4 is:
“Blunt the sharpness, untangle the knots, soften the light, and become one with the dust.”
Early in my career, I believed that strong leaders had to demonstrate expertise constantly.
Over time, working with multidisciplinary drug development teams changed my perspective.
Developing a new therapeutic requires collaboration among scientists from biology, chemistry, process development, analytical development, manufacturing, clinical development, regulatory affairs, and quality.
Every team possesses unique expertise.
If everyone insists on proving that their discipline matters most, progress slows dramatically.
The best leaders don’t dominate every discussion.
Instead, they create an environment where different perspectives naturally come together.
For example, before rejecting someone’s proposal, experienced leaders first try to understand the assumptions behind it.
Rather than asking:
“Who is right?”
They ask:
“What problem are we actually trying to solve?”
Leadership is not about winning arguments.
It’s about reducing unnecessary friction so the entire team can move forward together.
The Psychology Behind Leaving Space: Why Creativity Needs Quiet
Modern neuroscience surprisingly supports Lao Tzu’s philosophy.
Studies have shown that prolonged information overload reduces creativity, decision quality, and learning efficiency.
Many breakthrough ideas don’t emerge while we’re staring at a computer screen.
They appear while walking, exercising, showering, or simply allowing our minds to wander.
This phenomenon is associated with the brain’s Default Mode Network (DMN), a network that becomes active during periods of rest and reflection.
The DMN helps integrate knowledge, connect distant ideas, and generate creative insights.
In other words,
Leaving space isn’t wasted time.
It’s how the brain performs some of its most important work.

Create psychological safety where people feel comfortable sharing ideas.
Give others room to grow rather than becoming the center of attention.
Ironically, the strongest organizations are often those that rely least on constant control.

Modern society encourages us to accumulate more.
More knowledge.
More achievements.
More skills.
More meetings.
More responsibilities.

The best scientists know when to rethink an experiment.
The best leaders know when to step aside and let others lead.
The best careers aren’t built by chasing every opportunity—they’re built by making intentional choices.
Like an empty cup, our lives become valuable not because they’re completely full, but because they leave room for new ideas, new people, and new possibilities.
My Reflection
Every time I revisit Tao Te Ching Chapter 4, I discover something new.
Earlier in my career, I believed that growth meant continuously accumulating more knowledge, more accomplishments, and more experience.
But after working across academia, biotechnology, and entrepreneurship, I’ve realized that meaningful growth often comes from something different.
It comes from leaving space.
Space to remain humble.
Space to listen before speaking.
Space to question assumptions.
Space to let others contribute.
Space to continue learning.
For me, the greatest lesson of Tao Te Ching Chapter 4 is simple:
True strength isn’t found in filling every space. It’s found in knowing when to leave space—for yourself, for others, and for the possibilities that have yet to emerge.
